On this new beginning, I am reminded every moment of the one person who will never leave me behind. Even though she can never tuck me in again, kiss a boo-boo to make it better, or bake the best chocolate chip cookies a little boy could taste, her presence remains. She could take a bad day and make it great, turn a frown upside down, and always assure you that everything would work out. She was the best example of what a woman should be. She was equal parts soft and tough. She could punch a wall one second and show you compassion the next.
She taught me countless lessons in the 36 years I had her in my life. The first one that comes to mind is when I didn’t listen to her and climbed the fence anyway. I ended up getting hung up by my belt loop. Her teaching skills were so refined that she left me there at the age of 8, crying for five minutes. You might say this was mean or even abusive, but I call it giving me time to reflect on my stupidity and disobedience. I am here today to tell you I’m just fine, and I learned how to jump a fence.
Another lesson she taught me was how to meet bills that were bigger than the paycheck. She could’ve put any CFO to shame—she would’ve taught them tricks they could never have imagined. But the lesson that carries me through these days of my life, the one I feel is most important, is the respect and compassion she instilled in me. I may have come by it honestly, but she definitely nurtured it.
The greatest gift she gave me was the ability to treat a lady the way God intended—with honor and respect. I’ve done everything in my power to live up to both God's and her teachings. God made it clear that woman is a gift to a man, and he should treat her as such. And as God’s word tells us, none of us are perfect—we all fall short and sin. That includes me, but I strive to do my best.
I wish so much that she were still here with us, but God needed another angel around His throne. On December 23, 2008, she went to Heaven. How can I be so sure? She confessed her acceptance of Christ as her Savior.
I love you, Mama!!! God has perfect wisdom and knew exactly the mother I needed. Your lessons will carry me all my days.
For now, I wish you all the best as you take your own path seeking you!!
