Have you ever had one of those days where all the little things seem to turn into something major? It’s like you start a task, and something small happens. It doesn’t make you mad, but it just irritates you a little. You push through it, then move on to the next thing, and something else little happens to irritate you. You get past it, move to another task, and again, something minor happens that gets under your skin. And your day just keeps going like this. All you can do is keep telling yourself, “It’s gotta get better. It’s going to get better.”

How do you handle those days? What do you tell yourself to push through? Or do you just give in and let the day win? For me, giving up was never an option. Growing up with the mother I had, I was taught that you just have to keep moving forward, keep making things work the way you need them to. I wasn’t in the military, but I always knew what “persist, adapt, and overcome” meant. How did I know? Because I had a mother who taught me that. Where did she get it from? I don’t know, but I’m glad she had it—and I’m glad she passed it on to me.

Every now and then, I have a day like this. Yesterday was one of them. I had to keep my wits about me and keep going. About halfway through my day, things started to turn around. Maybe it was because I started paying a little more attention to what I was doing, or maybe the little things just got easier to handle. I don’t have days like this very often, but when I do, I always remember my mom’s words. She taught me that I can handle anything that comes my way and overcome any obstacle or situation.

Thanks to her, I was given a spirit of optimism and the belief that things will always get better as long as you keep fighting and never give up. And yesterday, I remembered a quote from the great coach Jim Valvano, who, in a famous speech, said, "Don't give up, don't ever give up." I’ll carry that spirit with me forever, because it’s one of the greatest gifts my mother ever gave me.

For now, I wish you all the best as you take your own path seeking you!!
